5 Interesting Facts you Probably Didn't Know about your Hands!

Date: June 25th, 2017!

Hands! They are AMAZING! They help us with basically everything, from cooking, to cleaning, to texting! Without them, I’m sure life would be very hard! (Exception: Those Amazing people out there who learned to do amazing things without hands) Even though we use them everyday, I know for a fact that there are still things you don’t know about them. This is where I come in. I’m here today to tell you everything you need to know. Without further a due, here are 5 interesting facts about your hands you probably didn’t know…

  1. Having 5 fingers, isn’t what you would call, normal. If you don’t know already, there are things called genes in your body, that basically tell you how you are going to look. (Look at my post about Heredity to learn more) There are 2 types of genes, Dominant and Recessive. If a gene is Dominant, it means that it overpowers the Recessive, and is usually more common. If a gene is Recessive, it’s the complete opposite. Now, why having 5 fingers isn’t normal is because it is a Recessive gene. You would actually have 6 fingers on each hand. We lost the Dominant gene, which makes the Recessive the runner up. Weird, huh?
  2. Massaging different parts of your hands can help relieve mild diseases and health problems. Okay yeah, this one is kind of out of the ordinary, but in some cases, it’s actually true. Why do you think you twiddle your thumbs when you’re nervous? It’s because your brain understands that your thumbs have pressure points to relieve nervousness or anxiety.
  3. There is a reason why your fingers shrivel up when they are wet. A common misconception you’ve probably heard is that it is bad for your hands to be exposed to water for long periods of time, or that shriveling up is a bad sign. Well, let me be the one to tell you, that it isn’t. When you are taking a bath, scuba diving, or swimming in a pool, your brain understands that you are in an environment with smooth surfaces. Your brain then sends a message to your fingers to "shrink," in order to create bigger grips. This is only to lower the risk of slipping, not to show signs of health problems. (If you slip anyway, sorry, can't help you there.)
  4. Fingerprints. If you look closely at your fingers, you’ll see that there are tiny grooves called fingerprints. (Okay yeah, you already knew that, but just keep reading.) These, as you probably know, are used as grips so you won’t slip. They usually have a certain pattern on them, but did you know that they can tell you your personality? If you want to learn more, look at this website:

  5. Your fingers actually have no muscles! They are made up if tendons that are moved by the muscles in your arms!
